I rescued this gorgeous desk from a grungy old garage having already had my plan of attack in minds. I love blues and greens in particular, teal and turquoise. After seeing how the drawer pulls cleaned up, I knew my color combo was going to be perfect! You can’t tell from this photo, but they cleaned up to a soft coppery color.
I applied my first coat of paint and once dry, I applied the darker color. I began sanding and was really diggin’ how the teal was starting to show through. The underlying wood stain had a slight orange tint, so I decided to sand down to stain in some areas and bare wood in others in order to reveal those tones. I just love how the stain played off the color of the handles and really brightened the whole piece up. My absolute favorite thing to do is layer paint colors. Sometimes you’ll see a lot of the first color and other times, it’ll be just be a hint.
Check out how the colors instantly came to life after applying the top coat.
And how about this top? It was my first time using Minwax’s Ebony. I applied two coats of stain with about 24 hours in between recoating and making sure to wipe away any excess. I was concerned the top might compete with the bottom too much, but it turns out that they were a perfect match.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, so make sure to leave me a comment. Please feel free to pin and share and of course, ask away if you have any questions. Thanks a bunch!
